This is our final day of vision clinics. As our bus arrived, people waiting in line made room for us to enter the church grounds. At 7:30am the line already extended past the property and around the corner. The church staff and volunteers were already here and since it was our second day, there was no need to set up tables or equipment- we could start seeing visitors right away.
Number of clinic visitors – 489
Number of follow-up requests to meet with a Pastor – 17
Unsung Heroes
This blog would not be complete without introducing you to the other half of our missionary team. These members are Hondurans who work locally on our behalf to make these mission trips possible. Meet our friends and teammates!

Sonya
I’ve mentioned Sonya before as the person who worked administrative miracles to get our eyeglasses through customs. She has been the chief in-country contact, medical advisor, and mission trip mentor since 2006. In this picture she is with a local Pastor and his wife.

Rosita is a dentist by profession and volunteers with our mission team out of love for God and a passion to help others. She also contributes her expertise to an American based non-profit which provides free dental care to Hondurans.

This is Denis, our fearless bus driver who has taken us halfway across Honduras and back, up into the mountains, through treacherous traffic conditions and done it all with a smile and a cheerful heart. He keeps our cargo secure wherever we go and finds ingenious ways to store our mounds of baggage. He has nerves of steel and his driving skills are impeccable as he negotiates obstacles unknown to most of us: unbearably close tailgaters at 80 miles per hour, broken roadbeds reminiscent of California earthquake aftermath, and pot holes the size of a hot tub. Thank you, Denis!

I introduce you to Sylvan, known by all as “El Doctor.” He’s the one we turn to when visitors have eye pain or unusual vision problems. He also performs eye exams on all children who come to clinic. Many patients present with redness or dry eyes. He dispenses eye drops to soothe their symptoms.
And a shout to someone special…

Howard is from Salem Lutheran Church and has participated on international missions teams since 2006. In addition to working the distance glasses station he is a natural leader for the loading and unloading of equipment. His knowledge, experience (and sense of humor!) have proved most helpful, especially to first-timers like me.
