Day 1: June 19, 2024
6:00am – Houston Intercontinental Airport:
It was dark and rainy as our team members gathered at Terminal C. It’s a busy place at this time of the day and there was a lot to do: roll call, making sure everyone had passports and had completed online immigration forms, and the shepherding of 12 footlockers full of eyeglasses and supplies from the curb to the United Airlines check-in counter. The flight departed at 9:57am and by noon you could see the skyline of San Pedro Sula from the aircraft’s window. Next steps will be getting though immigration, and more importantly getting the eyeglasses and medical supplies through the sometimes lengthy customs process. From there it’s a 3-1/2 hour bus ride to La Ceiba. Everyone will be ready for a shower, a hot meal, and prayer time before tomorrow’s wake-up call and their first clinic.
Here are some pictures of the training session on Saturday. Kevin led members through the visit process: Pastor welcome, Triage and preliminary eye exam, Autorefractor station, followed by eyeglass fitting. Several hundred visitors will go through the clinic each day. We want to serve them with excellence, show them Christ’s love, and help them find glasses that suit them just right.
